A tappet is a small, cylindrical, or conical component, usually made of hardened steel, that transfers the motion of the camshaft to the valve stem. The tappet rides on the camshaft’s lobes and translates the camshaft’s rotational motion into linear motion by opening and closing the engine’s valves.
