Aluminum air batteries produce energy from the reaction of oxygen with aluminum. It is considered to have the highest energy densities among all the batteries, as a part of the reactants comes from air. Aluminum air batteries use aluminum oxidation on the anode and oxygen reduction on the cathode to form a voltaic cell. The energy for the battery comes from the electricity consumed in the aluminum refining process. During this process, aluminum is consumed completely to form aluminum hydroxide. On the other hand, lithium ion batteries lose only 5% of its charge. With the electrolyte present in the batteries, oxidation reaction takes place at the aluminum anode and reduction reaction at the cathode; this process transfers the ions from the cathode to anode during discharge.
